- Why Friends for Friends?
Many scams have popped up since the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan and the Part C Medicare Advantage Plan came into effect a few years ago. Courtesy of the CHOICES program, here are some tips for consumers.
- Many types of sales materials will have a seal that looks like an official Medicare seal. The approved seal will have "Medicare Approved" in large letters. In smaller letters below, will be "Prescription Drug Coverage."
- No organization is allowed to use anything that suggests an endorsement from Medicare. Phrases such as "Medicare Endorsed" or "Medicare Approved" cannot be a part of their plan name.
- Plan representatives can distribute their brochures materials that include application forms and reply cards. They cannot conduct business which includes a sales presentation of collecting enrollments.
- All Medicare prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans are absolutely free. Representatives should NEVER charge an application fee. Additionally, gifts offered to potential members cannot exceed $15.00.
- You are not required to sign up for a Part D Plan. Signing up is optional. You will not lose your Medicare benefits if you choose not to sign up.
- Do not divulge any personal information when a representative is simply explaining the benefits of a plan you're considering.
- Your Medicare number should be treated like your credit card or bank account number. If someone asks for your Medicare information, be sure that they're authorized.
- You may enroll in a Medicare Plan over the Internet. A legitimate company is required to send you a paper bill and will not request an online payment.
- Marketing the Plan
- Pharmacists or other providers of long-term care or health care cannot suggest Plans which would further their own financial interests, but they are allowed to help you by providing objective information and help you decide a plan that may be appropriate for you.
- They must disclose any contractual relationship they may have with a Plan.
The CHOICES program offers free counseling to help you decide upon a Plan that's right for you. Legitimate counselors will never recommend one Plan over the other or try to talk you into a particular Plan.
