Dementia Care and Loss of Sight
11/16/09, East Hartford, CT
Two new studies were done which showed that many dementia caregivers fail to realize that hallucinations and loss of sight must be acknowledged when planning for an individual's physical environment.
The study went on to say that it is also important to be sure that people with dementia who wore glasses prior to the diagnosis wear them as the disease progresses. They must also receive eye examinations. The inability to see clearly can lead to hallucinations, just as the disease does.
It's crucial to have good lighting, good use of contrasts and an environment that is calming, i.e., no crowded rooms. In facilities, keeping people with dementia in a calm atmosphere will help prevent confusion and restlessness.
